The "pay yourself" scam

Post by Tandt »

Just passing it on so you all aware of a common scam going on atm.

  • You receive a text message that looks like a fraud alert from your bank about unusual activity. The text may look something like "Did you make a purchase of $100.00 at ABC merchant?".
  • If you respond to the text, you have now engaged the scammer and will receive a call from a number that appears to be from a bank.
  • They'll appear to be a representative from a bank and will offer to help stop the alleged fraud by asking you to send money to yourself with Zelle®.
  • The scammer will ask you for a one-time code you just received from a bank.
  • If you give them the code, they will use it to enroll their bank account with Zelle® using your email or phone number.
  • The scammer now has the ability to receive your money into their account.

Why would anyone ever respond to an unsolicited text, email or phone call? Don't talk to or respond to anyone you don't know. Don't download files or click links in any email you don't know. If you think it's a valid email from your bank, hover over the link and see where it sends you or were it was sent from. If it isn't the exact bank website address, don't click it. Don't respond to any mail you get that's unsolicited. If fact, if someone looks at you on the street, cut their throat because they are probably trying to rip you off. The old saying has never been truer. Trust no one and nothing and kill everyone. OK, I added that last part, but still! No bank or anyone else will ever call you asking for your card number or PIN#. If ever in doubt, destroy or hang up any contact method and call the bank and inquire yourself.

The sad thing is, the scamming buisness is very profitable.. Because soo many people fall for it. I lead a scammer on for 30 min just the other day just to waste their time. Well and it was fun.
