My Virus protection is now my virus
I've been using Avira antivirus product for years. It has been a free a German Shareware product currently it seems trying to go full commercial.
I've continued to use it because it did a great job protecting my systems.
Lately they have a popup pushing to purchase the commercial version of their product. The popup has always been there, just not as often and not as annoying, and never destructive . . . until now.
I've often joked that antivirus companies create the viruses to justify their product.
It's TRUE.
A week ago I got home and my wife wanted me to print a one page document. Word was running and my bazaar mule was on in EQ, but the computer was lagging like crazy.
I pulled up the task manager and my CPU was being hammered at 100%. There were 16 copies of the popup program (IMPGUI.exe) each pushing more than 5% on the CPU. I deleted them all. Could not delete the program. So I went to the web for suggestions, tried and failed.
One said use the virus software itself to tag them as suspicious software and send them to quarantine - failed.
Another suggested to block them thru administrator settings - fail.
This morning I pulled up the task manager (after deleting two copies of it yesterday):
I knew there was a reason I hated Germans.

Gloompaw turned me on to Avast freeware.
I downloaded mine from www.majorgeeks.com and love it!
I keep it on auto update and have had no problems running EQ with it.

Welcome to freeware and shareware. I just use Microsoft Security Essentials. Even the shit you buy is really useless unless it's the most obvious of trouble spots. The best anti-virus is your knowledge on how viruses spread and get on your computer. Don't do stupid shit and leave yourself open for attack and your safe.

I've used Avast! for a few years now and haven't had any problems.

Major Geeks keeps their website clean of malware and viruses.
Once you find a product from their site that you want they will direct to the developers page for downloading.
They also often have a download or two from their site which is safe and maybe a foreign country one too. Avast
