Basically can look up recent free books(mostly Indie's of various quality) in your genre of choice, or set a price watch to mail you if the ebook you want has a discount running from the publisher.

Ipads don't work well outdoors, sunlight totally washes the screen out. A kindle reads like a real book, the more light the better.

Tis all about the Xoom (I LOVE mine). Although, real readers actually buy the paper books :P

1) You can use the Kindle app on the computer, iPad, iPhone, etc. to read them also.
2) If they have no DRM you can convert them to epub with Open Calibre, a free program.
3) http://www.2epub.com/ lets you convert 3 files at a time from any format to any other one. It can be buggy though, especially with PDF's.

So you can read most of them on your Nook or iPad.

Actually I have 2000+ real books, if they weren't stored with family they would be impossible to keep. But the main problem is that my local bookstore, a chain one, carries fewer and fewer novels that I like. Mainly a few by authors I already like. There's very few new series or novels that are remotely interesting because the publishing and bookstore priorities have shifted in the last few years. It's very similar to what happened with the big movie companies.

I like the nook Simpletouch because I travel, its battery last for about 60 hours for reading, and it is small but not too small.

It's also handy to have a near-infinite supply of 'real actual books' available anywhere, at any time, in an object smaller than most dead-tree books.

My wife and I both have kindles and use them all the time. We got the first one because my own book collection was threatening to spill out of my office into the rest of the house where my better half would be waiting with cardboard boxes to collect them for Goodwill. Blasphemy!! My only beef with the knidle is the pricing on new books. Most new books by popular authors are priced at nearly the same as a hardback. Ridiculous! If I can't borrow it for free from amazon I've been going back to a good old-fashioned library and checking them out.

Nice thing about all the e-readers is that they have helped enable a ton of self-publishing. Lots of great books out there for $1-$3 that probably would not have made it through a traditional publishing house.

I haven't really explored Ipads or Kindles yet being a real book type person...
I LOVE looking at the color pictures!

The other day I received an email from my cousin and was thrilled to see He had a book available for downloads!

He sent me this email:
I've just published one of my novels on Amazon. My experiences with the
conventional publishing industry over the last 30+ years have been less
than impressive. It will be interesting to see how well this new
alternative publishing paradigm works.

"Escape From The Earth" is currently available as a Kindle ebook, and in
a couple of days should also be available as a print-on-demand
paperback. The Kindle version can be purchased for $2.99 or borrowed
for free from the Kindle lending library. The printed version will cost
$7.99.

Escape From The Earth
Three centuries had passed since the time of troubles, when the
Antitechs destroyed every trace of technology they could find. Joen
didn't know hunting was forbidden on the long dormant volcano until the
priests reverently tossed him off the rim for angering the god that
lived inside. Hubert, the last self-aware "metal-man" on the planet, was
left behind in the great exodus. He'd spent the last three centuries
hidden inside the old volcano, trying to build a ship to escape the now
primitive Earth. As our story opens, Hubert's ship is finished except
for one last major problem - and the young man who just dropped in might
be able to help him solve it. That is until Arial accidentally joins
their little band and distracts his attention...

Kort E Patterson

Not having any of this technology it will be some time before I can read his book, but I am so happy for him.
If any of you read it please let me know how you liked it.

The one benefit that Amazon has is their store is much easier to search in and the recommendations get better the more you shop even without buying. So you can find books on there and buy them on B&N's less intuitive store for your nook or iBookstore. I know some hate Amazon but using their store to search for stuff you'll buy elsewhere still works.
