Well i wont blame eq but ....

Postby Derdarr » Sun May 22, 2011 7:32 am

Last night while i was sound asleep and my computer off it appears i sent out a large batch of email's to multiple email address's that are not even in my contacts. I've went in and changed my email password and hope that it will fix that problem and i'm running virus and will run maleware scan when that is finished. Was an invitation to click a link to a game called Runescape, which i've only heard of and never d'l or played. As far as i can remember lately i've d'l nothing suspicious or opened anything so i'm slightly afraid it might have something to do with the soe hack. Just thought i'd fyi it out there that maybe others might be proactive and do the same with there passwords.

Do you use AOL?
a co-worker of mine a few years ago got a nasty-gram from AOL suspending his account after complaints that he had spammed out 26,000 porn ads. He knew nothing about it and had proof that he wasn't online at the time.
Taking control of your E-mail account does seem to be pretty easy for hackers, especially if you have your computer remember your password.
But how could it relate to the sony hack? Unless you use the same password and the hackers exploited that.

had a similar problem with a old hotmail account. Something about using my email header to send emails with some type of email program. Problem really didn't resolve itself since that was at the time I got a new computer and deleted/reinstalled the OS on the old one.

I'd usually get about 50 failed mail deliveries since I was spamming everyone and no reply addresses. As far as I know, its just a spamming program, but I guess could be used for viruses. Your account is probably going to get suspended as Meso says, mine got suspended and was a pain getting it reactivated.

well i'm hoping not as i've changed the password and havent seen any more attempts for it to send anything out, was about 15 to twenty email's with multiple address's i didnt bother counting but i'd guess 4 or 5 per email. It would suck to have to get a new email addy:(

the more crafty ones will use your email and remove all trace that they were there. It's no isolated thing, and i'm no expert, but botting other computers is widespread. One trojan is all it takes to take over your system. The only fully protected system is unplugged.
Just a year or so ago, a huge bot network based in Spain was busted. 99% of the computer owners had no idea that illicit business was run thru their systems, including banks, fortune 500 companies, and gov't computers.
Regular malware sweeps and ocassional password changes are the best you can hope for
