Szork's (evil) robot!

Post by Szork » Thu Apr 19, 2007 6:03 am

As many of you know, Kahlyla and I work for MDA (aka MacDonald Dettwiler Robotics) - a company that focuses on unique engineering projects like the space shuttle arm (Canadarm) and the space station arm (SSRMS).

I work as a systems engineer, and Kahly is in admin/shipping.

Over the past two years, I've been working on a surgical robotic system for the University of Calgary. We delivered the product in February, and testing is now complete. Here is the press release, with video, for those interested:

So, slighly less overtime for me now! More time for important stuff, like slacking off and playing EQ.

I think you can see my sleeve in one shot!

Generally, the camera guys are trained to NOT shoot the extremely disheveled, scraggly, overworked engineer with red eyes and a slight twitch.

Who has secretly programmed the robot to destroy the world, once it is in full service.

I am sure MacDonald Dettwiler Robotics is some fancy name for the mass production line at some McDonalds hamburger store.

The robotics are the is the belt that slides the hamburgers to the next person.

Your secrets have been exposed Szork :P

Don't worry, Drolek. It might LOOK cool, but I still hate my job like everyone else =)

Engineering like this is 5% cool creative design, and the rest is taken up with paperwork, bullshit, pulling your hair out, and trying to get customers to stop providing 'input'.

Oh, and try not to get a brain tumor, it's not pretty. The biopsy tool we created for this is modeled after an ice-cream scoop - simple but effective /nod.

I work with engineers - the most common complaint with the "rest of us" is about engineers in general :)

I agree with Szork. Customers suck when they want to change your design. But nothing is worse than architect's. Stupid architects not realizing that impossible means impossible, awful measurement system, screwy paper sizes, needy deadlines and delicate feelings. Oh and town councils, even worse than architects is some housewife voting against your project because she thinks she knows something about wetland conservation, but probably can't add 2 and 2.

I recall wetland conservation issues, if I recall correctly the town of Easton managed to get some drainage ditches classified as wetlands. Aren't architects just glorified dress designers anyway?

As for the ice cream scoop - wasn't that the name of a bard we had in CN? Can I get the chocolate fudge brain sundae please?

Easton is pretty easy to deal with, you can work with them. Lakeville on the other hand will make you homicidal.

And I agree about Architects!
