Fantasy Gaming graphics and the Future of...

Postby Kiezer » Sat Sep 16, 2006 7:49 pm

So like, I've been watching Vanguard with anticipation for some time now, and well, I'm disappointed, the graphics look like another damn EQ 2 attempt. It would seem that all the game developers are all caught up in the whole "simulation" look, trying to make things look super realistic. But I find it makes everything look like a kids cartoon. RPG games should be dark, scary, dungeoness; am I alone on this subject? Do game developers not realize we play EQ to escape from reality, not to simulate it?

Even with "EverQuest'" graphics being so out-dated they STILL look the most authentic out of all the MMORPGs imo.

The new D&D online game was promising, it had real nice looking graphics, but it's just another fully instanced NWN as far as I can tell. BOO!

WTB authentic RPG Graphics....god I hope they get it right when EverQuest 5 comes out :P

that was something I really liked about WoW graphics - they did not try to look like real people :)

I hate to say it... but what about Guild Wars? OMG, the mesmers in that were HOT! And I don't care what anyone says, they do not look like real people because even Halle Berry couldn't look that good on her best day. :) Do you not like those graphics Kiezer?

Hmm, I've not seen or looked at Guild Wars...lookin it up...

The official game site screenshots are gorgeous, but once you find the real in game screenshots, they dont compare, but that's normal. On the right track though, that's for sure.

The in game stuff does look almost like the art. Mesmers as I said are amazing... but then the elementalists are like RPG pornstars. My niece plays GW, and I just stood there and drooled, it was like amazing. :) <cough> I am sure people just play it for the content though, not for the incredible-looking half naked men and women running around.

OMG, and if you ever get the chance to see GW in action, have the characters dance. Every class does a different one... warriors for instance do the V across the eyes thing that they did in Pulp Fiction, and the Mesmers ... well, you have to see that one to believe it. Necromancers (or the equivalent) do this yoga type thing that's cool. You can get an entire 'cast' line of them going where they all do it in sync because the PC's typed the command at the same time. It's so funny. :)

I loved the Guild War graphics on Tar's link, thoroughly enjoyed watching the clips. Wonder if the game itself is good. I have alot of teenagers hanging around that usually talk about games and stuff and this one hasnt been mentioned at all by them.

I don't advocate GW to anyone. For one thing, I don't think it has the long term appeal of EQ. The content is not as challenging (imo) and it promotes solo'ing with 'hired mercenaries' instead of promoting groups like EQ does. I like the interaction between people in EQ, not just killing a mob to get more gear so I can kill a bigger mob to get bigger gear etc etc. I realise other people are different. There are a few things about GW that are appealing--the graphics for one, and it's easier for another. But overall, I think it palls quickly and is not a good long-term bet. That's my two cents worth!
