I can't believe this...

Post by Qmaus » Mon Apr 24, 2006 10:21 am

Well, some of you may recall that several (like 5 or 6?) months ago I nominated myself for a position with the IRS. I was led to believe that they'd tell us one way or the other as to whether or not we'd land the position.

I got a letter saying I qualified, but that just means I made the "first cut".

Didn't hear anything at all after that.

Gave up on it.

Well, just today, a phone call from the IRS came for me to my mother's house. She just called to let me know. I need to call them back by wednesday. So it's possible I may get the position after all. I can't believe it after so long.

Anyway, gonna call em back soon, wish me luck! This would be a great time to move, considering Terry and I still don't have much in the way of belongings, plus we just got our insurance money. If I get the position, it would be a graveyard shift (Midnight-8:30am) which means I could take Terry to her doctor appts. without having to beg off of work to do so, I could make raids all the time (though I might have to leave early if they start to run too late, LOL), and I could look into several other projects I've been wanting to start.

Cross fingers, cross toes, cross everything but legs, lol

Called the lady back this morning. I have been offerred the position!

I will be receiving some information for fingerprinting and background check, etc. tomorrow. Once that's all done and given the green light, I'm hired. She said that the tentative starting date would be around 30th of May or so.

Also, apparently there's a shift differential for working the graveyard, and I can expect to make about 10% more than the quoted salary, which is a nice touch. My military time will count towards retirement and also put me in a category whereby I earn more vacation time than someone else who would just be starting the job without that military experience. Health plan, life insurance, and alot of other stuff comes with the position also.

The good news: I've been waiting years for a break like this. I had begun to think it would never happen.

The bad news: Due to the approximate starting date and the time I would spend training in the position, plus the fact that I won't accumulate much vacation time in a mere 24-ish days, it looks like I won't be making it to Vegas

Terry and I were really looking forward to being there with all of you. We really need a vacation and we would have loved to meet you all and see shows, etc.; but I just can't sacrifice this opportunity. It sucks that I will have to bow out of the Vegas trip, but I really need this job. I know you will all understand. And as far as Terry and I needing a vacation, well, it'll come eventually, just not as soon as we'd hoped. Maybe I'll try to save up so we can hit Paris for a week or two in spring '07. I hear Paris is lovely in the springtime.
