Some computer assitance please

Postby Jaffod » Tue Jan 24, 2006 2:54 pm

Ok, so I want to get my new PC up and running for my 2-boxing pleasure, it is old but up until 2003 it did run EQ ok. So I get done patching and downloading DX 9.0c and I get - No 3D device found  OK SO I poll the guildies online and get myself a nice nVidia GeForce 5200 (I think 5200 is correct my memory is not what it used to...). I put the new bad ass drivers in and...No 3D device. SO I redownload the drivers and DX 9.0c - No 3D device.

So I run DxDiag - guess what - yep I have no 3d acceleration available. I reboot and try to configure...dxdiag crashes:(. Ok now I am getting a tad miffed and turn to my next culprit - the Windows 98 OS. Turns out that my graphics card is not supported /sigh.

So time to upgrade to XP right? Not so fast, I have the upgrade disk but my hard drive is too small to accomodate it. I do have a second drive in there that is bigger, but it is not my primary drive. So I rearrange the jumpers to make the bigger drive master...yeah my PC dont like that :)

So what do I have to do in order for my bigger drive to be considered the system disk for me to install XP? Is there an easy way to transfer the OS onto the other drive?

Thanks

Jaff

ok, got the drives switced - now I cannot upgrade to XP because of a conflict between my video card and my motherboard. I tried the old vid card and there is the same issue. I actually think this may have been the problem all along. Any thoughts on how I can fix this problem? It used to work (like two years plus ago) with the other card but now does not. =(

the 5200 card should work and does support dx9.x and should show up as a correct directx device.
when you are in windows, at the desktop, right click > properties > settings tab ... what does it say for display there? It should say something like Plug and Play Monitor on Nvidia 5200.
If you installed the drivers from nvidia. if you didn't then it will say something like vgasave.

But Win 98 does not support the 5200, and I cannot upgrade to XP because there is a conflict between the motherboard and the graphics card. I will check though

Your best bet is to format your drive and start from scratch. But, with only a upgrade disk, you can't do that. Sound to me like you either have to go purcahse Windows XP full install or get a new computer. Most newer cards/drivers don't support Windows 98. And with good reason. Windows 98 is increadibly unstable. I'd seriously doubt you could two box with 98 anyway.

If you have the Win98 original install CD, during the install process for XP Upgrade, it'll prompt you to insert a qualifying Windows install CD. Pop in the 98 CD (OEM versions on custom CDs often work, even), and it may let you continue installing.

if it does say that the video is on the 5200 then dxdiag should report correctly. install the latest video drivers from nvidia.com for the OS and see what happens with dxdiag.

I just ordered a new motherboard/CPU

I ordered my new cpu yesterday as well. I am all excited and can't wait to get it (about 3 weeks). I got myself:

Dell Dimension XPS 600
P4 3.0 ghz dual core processor
Windows XP
2 gig DDR2 SDRAM 667mhz
256 meg Nvidia 6800 video card (motherboard with the new SLI chipset so I can add another vid card in a few months :).... running EQ on 256 or 512 Meg video ram should be sweet)
2x 160 gig SATA Raid 0 hard drives (didn't spend the 1K$ required for the 10k rpm drives though :( )
20.1 inch wide screen Ultrasharp Flat Pannel
SoundBlaster Audigy 2
Ethernet Gigabit
yadi yadi yada :)

Coming from running a an old P3 1.0ghz with 384 meg ram and a 32 meg vid card....I will be in heaven and be able to look at you guys instead of running looking at the floor. Im sure it will feel like running on Selo :)

How much did that set ya back? I've been looking at upgrading my old P4 that is about 3 generations old. I've become interested in the dual core processors and the SLI duel graphics cards.

Then yesterday it happened...my computer freezes up and I smell smoke. Looks like my power supply is toast. Now I gotta fix my mom's computer so I can get my even older computer an Athlon 2400 that I've had hooked up over there at her house. Then I either buy me a new PS and get the old computer upgraded enough to play EQ untill parts come, or stall untill I can upgrade my computer with tax return money. On my old computer will need to change out graphics cards, update drivers, ect. So you might not see me for a week.

Makes calling up someone like Dell, and ordering a new one tempting.
