What happens when you let the maus in your house?

Postby Qmaus » Fri Dec 02, 2005 12:51 am

So here I am, still sitting in Millington, TN and finally reaching the peak of my frustration with my limited internet access. I'm sick of going to the library to use the internet, having to be restricted to their days and hours of operation, and being restricted to only one hour of use. Naturally, i'm also sick of being denied my EQ fix! My stepfather for some reason just won't get off his butt and get us an internet connection.

So when I woke today, I decided it was time to take the matter into my own hands. Now, Millington (wannabee) Cable Co. doesn't offer internet service, and if I went DSL it would have to be charged to my stepfather's phone account, which will freak him out, so I figured I was stuck with dialup. Yeah, it means i'm gonna be crawling on the web, but crawling is better than not being there at all.

All I need is to install a dialup modem, plug into the phone line, grab a convenient ISP and get going. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, installing the modem and getting an ISP wasn't too bad, but believe it or not, plugging into the phone line was insane.

What follows is the story of Qmaus, obsessively determined to get on the internet, LOL.

Okay, so the first thing I did was look around the room Terry and I are using for a phone jack. Problem number one crops up right there. I see TWO phone jacks, right next to each other. Not really suspecting a problem at this point. I figured the owners probably had at one time used a separate phone line/jack for telephone and another for computer. All I need to do is just plug in a phone to each jack and find out which one's got the dial tone.

So I run out to the living room, grab the phone, and bring it back with me. Plug into the left phone jack...dead line. Okay, must be the jack on the right. Plug into the right-side phone jack...OMG! BOTH lines are dead!
This can't be happening to me! Arghhh!

Hmm...

Okay, Qmaus, stop trying to rip out your hair and think for a moment. Obviously the jack can tap into the line, it's just been disabled. Shouldn't be too difficult to figure out how to fix it. Time to return to the living room and see how that phone jack is wired up so I can use it as a reference.

After removing the cover from the phone jack in the living room I see that the jack itself has four wires: red, green, black, and yellow. The wall also has four wires coming from it, also red, green, black, and yellow. Red is connected to red, green to green, and the black and yellow wires from the wall aren't connected at all. I think they're likely ground wires. Either way, the setup seems simple enough. All I need to do now is just unscrew the bedroom phone jack, hook red to red and green to green and everything will be solved, right? WRONG.

The bedroom phone jacks both have the same setup on the jacks themselves. Same four wires, same four colors. However, instead of four wires coming from the wall, I now find myself faced with EIGHT wires coming from the wall. What's even worse is that none of these eight wires match the colors of the jack's wires! I've got one blue, one blue/white striped, orange, orange/white, green, green/white, brown, and brown/white. The blue and blue/white pair are already hooked up to the jack on the right side; the orange and orange/white pair are hooked up to the left side jack, and the other four wires aren't hooked up at all.

Hmm...what to do now?

At this point I decide to get a "second opinion" by taking a look at the phone jack in the kitchen. After dismantling it, I see that it has the same setup as the one in the living room. Those eight other wires coming from the wall of my bedroom jacks? Not there. Not anywhere. This is getting annoying now.

I think I can, I think I can...

At this point I bundle up and head outside to find the telephone box for the house. Those eight wires have GOT to show up somewhere and serve some purpose. I circle the house looking for the box and what do I find? Not one, but TWO telephone boxes! Ugh. Okay, this might make a little sense. If the owners previously had two phone lines and one is now disabled, then perhaps they had a separate telephone box for each line. One box, logically, should be active, and the other one dead.

Open box #1. I see the usual four wires, with red to red and green to green and with black and yellow not connected. I also see six of the eight wires that come out of the wall behind my bedroom jacks. Aha! None of those six wires are hooked up to anything. What about the other two missing wires, though? The orange and orange/white striped ones? Well, there is another box here...

Open box #2. Here I find the missing two wires. I notice that the orange is hooked to the red and the orange/white is hooked to the green. Okay, thinking and thinking, I decide that this box must be the dead box because the wires are hooked up both here and in the bedroom jack, yet the line was dead. The other bedroom jack had the blue and blue/white pair hooked up to it, but those wires in box #1 weren't connected to anything.

Using the setup in box #2 as my guide, I decide to hook the blue wire in box #1 up to the red wire, and the blue/white to the green. Close up both boxes, go back inside, grab the living room phone again, plug it into the bedroom jack with the blue and blue/white wire connections, and...

Houston, we have a dial tone!!!!! 8)

Why do I suddenly have the theme from "MacGyver" running through my head?
And that's why i'm able to make this post at 2:45am in the comfort of my bedroom here. Whew!

Moral of the story: Never, ever, underestimate the stubborn determination of a Taurus. :P

What you can expect now that I have the internet:

Well, it's dialup, and the 2nd phone line is inactive, so I imagine I'll go linkdead if somebody decides to make a phone call. For that reason, plus the fact that incoming calls are frequent here, you can pretty much expect that my time online will be limited to late, late at night when everyone else is asleep. This means that I may not be able to make it to raids, but we'll see how that goes. It might be possible, but it's more likely everyone else in the house will interrupt me constantly or want to use the phone, etc.

Also, since it's dialup and I've only ever used cable broadband on this computer, I expect I may have a few small bugs to work out in order for EQ to go smoothly. You can also figure I will probably go linkdead for a while pretty consistently until I manage to figure out what is causing me to disconnect. Nevertheless, I will be back very soon. Well worth the frustration, IMO. :D

Take care, everyone. Cya in Norrath!

hey there dial up junkie hehe.

Mostly only a few things will make you go LD... noise on the phoneline , that will cramp your connection ... will cause LDs.

Your gonna have a higher pings. But will only limit you in raid settings. Shouldn't really affect you in a grp setting.

Great to see you back hun!!! I have lived with dial up until just very recently, and we networked two computers on a 32 kbps connection. Believe me, it can be done, just can be very frustrating. I hope to see you in the land of Norrath VERY SOON!

About the extra wires...

It sounds to me like they wired new outlets with CAT5 cable - That is, 4 twisted pairs. Commonly used in computer networking, but it's just as often used in telephone wiring. The second box was probably used for DSL in the past, or perhaps a home office with multiple phone lines.

The extra pairs of wires in the standard wire box are actually for a second phone line - A phone only uses 2 pins on it's RJ11 connection, and only 2 wires in the jack, for a phoneline. But an outlet can (usually doesn't) support 2 phonelines on the same jack, if your phone supports it.

I've fought your fight many times, and congratulate you on your victory over whatever goofball came up with the current telecommunications infastructure in this nation.

YAY Qmaus, it will be great to see you again!

Can you use callwave.com or something to pick up your calls for you so that you aren't disconnected perhaps?

Hugs you, have missed you much!

Gonna take a bit longer for me to be in-game. Apparently it's going to take me several DAYS to patch EQ at this speed, LOL. Oh well, better late than never. See ya when I see ya!

Ya, I myself once enjoyed the splendor of EQ on dial-up....

Ahh, nothing like setting up the patcher and going to bed, waking up and still seeing 2 days remaining. Even better is when you get disconnected thirty minutes after going to sleep!!

Ahh well, it will be good to finally meet you in game Qmaus ;)
And congratulations on being stubborn enough to work out the complex pattern of phone wiring!

That reminds me (beware, Silly story inc):

About 12 - 13 years ago I had this bad influence friend Mandi. She was always staying up all night talking to boys & the like and was grounded from the phone on a regular basis. Well her mom would leave and I'd just bring over my telephone and we'd continue to stay up all night talking to boys and etc.

Well finally her mom figured that out. One day I tried to plug in my phone and to our total & utter teenage horror, there was no dial tone. So we went out the phone box outisde of the house and realized one side didn't look the same as the other. After a quick trip to my house we found some copper wire & were back in business. Her mom never figured out that we jimmy-rigged the box from then on whenever she'd leave.

Such naughty naughty girls!

yeah patching does take a long time when your on dial up. mine was about 80 hours of patching. since your limited to access. say will take a while. just keep on trucking. Is why i put my eq game and other games on a 2nd partition. Really saved me a bunch of time

Im looking forward to seeing you in the game again, Q -

I still don't have my epic, in fact I still haven't done (or even TRIED) any of the fights yet even though I have everything else. Call me a slacker, but I kind of thought I would wait for the master to come back so I did right the first time on every fight.

Hope to see you soon!

Well, hopefully i'll be available to help you guys with 1.5's soon. Sorry it's taking so long for me to return. If you want some tips or strats, however, I know my current phone number is posted somewhere in the member forums. Also, Deverin, Fibban, and several others have my number available.

I noticed from Altarr's post that you guys are looking at the bard fights. Fun fun fun, every one of them. Three groups is enough to take them all out. It can be done with less, of course, but three groups should guarantee the win.

What about the Ancient Megladon? :)

Good to see you making the trip back to Norrath Q. I had dial up for my first year in EQ...I shudder at how long it took to patch etc back then I cannot even try to estimate the horror now. Keep at it and see you soon

Xril jinxed me! :P

Qmaus..I just HAD to reply to this! I've been watching your thread forever and am SO glad to hear you and Terry are safe and sound.

As for your house...words can't express my sorrow and commiseration for your losses...omg  .

To say that I totally admire your determination to get yourself; not only back into things, but to EQ too; is just so outstanding! I know that YOU know; you will find the best people in the world here, to not only cheer you on in game; but to help you begin your new life and back you up there as well. You couldn't be in better hands and I'm so HAPPY to hear that you now have a link back to them!

As I say...I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you; other than the boards, but I wish you well in your new future and am happy that you have the wonderful people of CN to be at your side! God Bless! :D

Almost...done...patching, LOL.
2-3 more days of patching, perhaps?
Then hopefully I will be able to stay online without the ISP doing wierd stuff to LD me.

Judging by the way things are at the house, currently, it's likely my play will be restricted to only about 2-3 hours per night, likely after 10 or 11 pm Central Time.
