First of all, I'm so sorry for being tardy in responding. I just happened to enter this forum tonight and saw your post.

This whole Katrina thing is surreal. We're doing fine here, all things considered. Our jobs are now sitting in a heap north of US 90 in Biloxi, but our home fared well, with just minor damage. We live near a bayou about a mile from the Gulf of Mexico, and we're about twenty feet above sea level. Water missed coming into our home by inches, so we were lucky. I can't say the same thing about my cousin's home on Biloxi's Back Bay; it's a total loss. The storm surge came right over the top of her house. (There's crap from the storm deposited on her roof.) The front of the structure was literally shoved into the living and dining rooms, with bricks and steel beams littering the floor. Also, we have a former coworker staying with us who not only lost her job, but her home, her car--pretty much everything she owned, except for two changes of clothing and her pets.

It's weird that all of this disruption and change happened so suddenly. The Saturday before the storm was a normal workday for us. The weather was beautiful, with people out on the beaches grilling hamburgers and sunning themselves. People asked me at work if we were planning to evacuate. I said I'd watch the hurricane's progress and make a decision on Sunday. One guy called me a chicken for contemplating leaving. (I haven't talked to him since, but he apparently changed his mind and left with his family. Good thing, too: his home is gone.) When I woke up Sunday morning and saw that the storm had strengthened to 175 MPH maximum sustained winds and had shifted more towards us, the decision to leave was a no-brainer. In ten years, we'd never fled from a storm, but in less than a year, we've evacuated for three: Ivan last September, Dennis in July, and now Katrina.

Anyway, we evacuated to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for several days, and then moved to Columbus, Mississippi for a couple more days before we returned home. We're only now getting a chance to slow down a bit. We've been working pretty much non-stop, clearing debris and such. It's going to take a lot of work to rebuild this place, but the people here are determined to do it. Count us among them.

OK, I guess I'll stop here before I get too, um, long winded. Thanks for thinking about me, Ryana, and give my regards to Gurala and Ak.

Now that you mentioned it, can you do me a favor and send a letter on my behalf to the Mississippi Baptist Convention and tell them we want our casinos (and jobs) back, please?
