Postby Qmaus » Sat Aug 27, 2005 9:15 pm

It looks like hurricane Katrina heading straight for my backyard. Terry and I are going to evacuate, so I may be gone a while. No idea how long i'll be gone because there are other factors besides the hurricane and possible damage that it can do for me to think about. Anyway, if anybody needs my character's help, Spensir has access to the account.

Working hard to prepare for our evacuation right now, else I'd type more. Miss you guys, cya when I can cya.

/rant ON

The failure of the various civic powers to fortify New Orleans, a critical port (5th largest in the world) against the worst that nature could offer is an oversight of truly staggering proportions. It's not like these people weren't explicitly warned about what a category 5 could do!

To be sure, many of the floating dead they will fish out of the flooded streets and attics were brave fools who willingly ignored the direct order by municipal authorities to vacate to the Superdome or out of the city and paid dearly for their folly. Too many others, however, were the poor and/or infirm, who had nohwere to go or no means to escape the city in the caravan of Dodge Caravans heading out of Dodge on I-10 before the storm hit.

Even if the powers that be cry only crocodile tears over the sea of bloated African-American corpses, the billions they did not spend to fortify the levees against a Category 5 will seem like a bargain compared to the increased insurance premiums we will all see in the near future.

Myrron evacuated (lived in Slidell) and is safe. Do we have any news on the others?

I grew up in Chalmette. All my life we knew this could happen but I never imagined how bad it actually is.

Hi everyone,
Sorry it took me so long to find internet access and get to the boards.

After I finish this post I'll see if I can log into chat for a few minutes since I see a number of you here.

The reason my cell phone isn't working atm, Spensir, is actually just because I can't pay the bill right now, LOL.

Anyway, Terry, the two cats, and myself are currently safe at my parents' house in Millington, TN, near Memphis. My parents are still in europe, but my little brother is living there while waiting for them to finish moving in and to arrive. Unfortunately, there's no internet at the house because it's not yet fully inhabited. No TV either, which is driving Terry nuts. Not much in the way of furniture and we're sleeping on the floor.

By the way, this is a timed session at the library so dunno how much time I have before they boot me off, LOL.

Terry isn't taking this very well. She's depressed and crying / lamenting constantly and it's very hard for me to get her to eat anything. She's also talking daily about killing herself again, saying she no longer has anything to live for. The flood waters, I understand, got very high and all I can do is hope that the stuff I put in the attic survived the assault. That would require two things: a) The flood level failing to reach the attic, and b) The roof not being blown off by the high winds.

I have no idea when I'll get a chance to return and check things out. I don't know when the city will be considered safe to return to and I also am very short on money to get back right now. We'll see how that goes.

Also, apparently some money that my mother transferred into my bank account several days ago has not yet posted to my account. Unfortunately, all the money I spent getting up here and surviving since our arrival is posting in a timely manner, LOL. Figures, everybody gets my money right away, and I have to wait, wait, wait for the money i'm expecting.

The drive up was a nightmare. We packed the car as full as we could and headed out. It took us 8 hours to get to the first big town in Mississippi because the traffic was moving so slow. Also, gas stations were closing and running out of gas and places were running out of food fast. Fortunately the gas situation didn't affect me much because my tank was filled up a few days before anyone even knew about the hurricane and I hadn't really driven more than about 2 miles since filling it. We also had some food in the car. Terry was a wreck and a burden through the whole thing and I really have no idea how I pulled it all off.

Hopefully the stuff in the attic is okay. I had to make some hard decisions about what to pack in the car and bring with us. I put my computer in the attic and all peripherals except for the printer. Just in case, however, I took the computer apart and removed the hard drive before I put it up in the attic. I brought the hard drive along with me here to TN in an electrostatic bag or whatever they call those things. I also put my collection of 1st edition AD&D hard-cover books (with all original cover art) up in the attic. Those are all out of print collectibles, so I really really hope they're okay.

Right now just trying to exist and recuperate for the most part. Hoping I won't have any trouble with getting insurance compensation. If things go well enough, I hope to have enough compensation to get out from the mortgage, sell what remains of the house for whatever I can get, and have enough money remaining to start a new life somewhere else. But for the moment all I can do is hope. We'll see how it goes. Have no idea what, if any, compensation I'll manage to receive.

Grats on Rathe! Sorry I missed it. I'm sure I'll get another shot someday.

Miss you all, will try to return to the boards when I can.

I'm not sure of the details, but you should check with Fema about stuff. They and the Red cross are doing a lot of help. I think the ones who have their information are helped by Fema while the Red cross is mainly providing aid near the center.

I'm glad you got out, everyone's been wondering.

I am SO glad to hear you're okay Qmaus (even amidst the chaos). We've all been worrying about you. You're a strong man and such a good person to keep your family going strong in a time where life IS a disaster. I know this year has been an especially tough one for you but I know you'll pull through that much stronger & wiser for it.

Hang in there, be safe, and big hugs. We'll be thinking about you every day until your return.

Qmaus, it is situations like yours that calms the minor annoyances life deals me day to day. After reading your post, I sat back and tried to imagine what the past few days must have been like for you and your wife and I thought about what I would have done. I think I would have been a puddle on the ground. You are clearly are a strong person, I hope your wife can absorb some of that energy while you both place one foot in front of the other in the days to come. I am glad you and your wife and kitties are safe, I am sorry for what you are going through, and I admire your strength. Keep your head up, Qmaus.
