Video Cards

Postby Goofydoofy » Fri Apr 25, 2014 8:49 am

So I have a Nvidia GTX680 video card I got a couple years ago. Works preferctly for everything except parts of Secret World. So, now I'm looking at a GTX Titan Black. However, it costs about $1,150. That's pretty steep. But, it's a hell of an upgrade to the GTX 680.

Thoughts?

If you have $1,150 to throw at a video card, go for it. I'm using an HD Radeon 5750 series graphics card that has handled every game on max graphics. I don't see the one I bought for sale, but looking around that's costing around $100. I built this computer around 4-5 years ago, but the whole system was less than that graphics card.

Try playing Secret World, level 6 areas. It will probably lag. My current card works perfectly for everything else. Which just tells me, it will lag in the future.

New Titan Z comes out April 29th for three grand. Maybe I'll grab that. But, I doubt it. That's a shitload of processing power for just gaming.

Or maybe, I won't get a new card. Looks like the GTX 680 is still a kickass card and isn't cheap. Might be better to just not play Secret World.

If you don't mind dropping that kind of cash on a vid card, that one would be awesome. Personally, I'd go for the GTX 780Ti, it's got about 90% of the performance of the Titan Black at only about 60% of the price. It would also give you about a 30 - 50% performance improvement over your current 680 depending on the specific game and settings. If you really want to go all out, just wait a bit until the Titan-Z is released, essentially 2 Titans on one card for a mere $3000.

Just checked out a video on that game, seems pretty interesting. What's it like? I'm on my way into work or I'd look at a few more.

I enjoy it. Once you get to the third section, soloing becomes much harder. Which kinda pisses me off because I don't usually have extended time to play games and bother with trying to get in groups. But, it's still fun. I think I've only just touched on the game still so far. There are group instances and I think even raids, although I haven't looked at any of that, yet.

You do not in any way need a $1000+ video card to play Secret World.

If there's 'lag', you need to quantify what's lagging, where, and how. What sort framerates, at what settings and resolution? I'm willing to bet you're just running into poorly optimized areas with crap occlusion culling, or big areas of fog.

Name the area you're in and I'll see what happens when I go out there, if I can reach it.

And a Titan Black isn't all that great of an upgrade to the top-end card from last generation. For that matter, SLI'ing with a second 680 would be worlds more cost effective and would curb stomp the Titan series.

I dunno Goofy, but surely there are better places to put that much of your money than into a single video card?

Also...

Titan Black versus 780Ti: http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1072?vs=1186

Here's a review for the R9 295X2 card versus 780TI SLI, 290X CF, HD 7990, etc. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7930/the- ... 2-review/6

Save your money. Seriously. Besides, what's your current specs otherwise? CPU, storage, etc? And what screen resolution are you playing at? I game at 2560x1440 and have very few complaints about my SLI'd GTX760s, and that's a $500 combo.

I couldn't sleep, so decided to take a look at TSW's performance - but not with my SLI'd GTX 760s. Instead, I poked around with my sister's GTX 750 Ti, in my typical gaming desktop (Intel i7 2600K, 16GB RAM, 240GB PNY SSD, at 2560x1440).

The only time I could get 'lag' was when bringing up an area map - there was a consistent half-second hesitation for some reason, but it's always done that from what I recall. Argatha and Kingsmouth were a constant 30+ FPS for me, at 2560x1440, Ultra quality settings plus FSAA HQ and High Quality Motion Blur settings turned on, in DX11. In London, 35-45FPS was pretty common.

Considering http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1130?vs=1186 is how the 750Ti stacks up against the Titan Black, unless you're doing some sort of surround video setup, a Titan Black would be absolute, complete, grotesque overkill for a 2 year old MMO.

It's the third section that lags. Blue Mountains. Lots of shit going on in the background. I run everything at 1920 x 1080. Blue Mountains in Secret World is the only place in any game with settings on max I've ever had an issue. I don't think it's worth it to spend that kind of money for one games lag in places. The game is still playable, I just need to look a specific direction away from all the background stuff to get smooth fighting. I could always reduce the depth of background detail etc. I was just mainly starting a thread to talk about the new cards. I'd more then likely SLI another GTX 680 before I bought something new. Those cards are still costing $600 or so. I'm not sure gaming is worth it. Reducing the settings slightly would probably be the most cost effective route. The rest of my system is fairly high end. It was top of the line two years ago.

I ran out there real quick (never been out there), keeping an eye on frame rates. With every single setting maxed including Tesselation, at 1920x1080 I was still at 25-30FPS until I got to some dumb undead bear stuck in a trap made of dream catchers, where I dropped to 15. Setting back to the Ultra defaults got me back up to 30. Admittedly I didn't run around too long since I'm too undergeared/underwhatevered to hang out there, but seemed OK to me along the main roads. Don't know what to say there.

I find it kind of interesting that nvidia will release a Titan series card (the plain Titan, now the Titan Black), then 6ish months later release a refresh that gets a card within a few percent of that Titan for just a bit over half the price.

I'm thinking of deleting my Facebook account anyway. I don't need virtual idiots around me all the time when it happens all day in real life.
