Using deadly force to control your kid's gaming

Well,

Dad got his point across, but it sounds like he had some bad aim. He missed both the monitor and his gamer kid.

My, this has evolved into an interesting thread! CN has some very reflective and thoughtful people in it. It's why I keep surfing back here even though the thought of re-allocating what free time I have back into getting any meaningful advancement in EQ makes me break out in a sweat. I think Teory h...

Economists who study human risk-taking behavior in experiments have conclusively shown that our behavior is disproportionately changed when the probability of a bad outcome goes from zero to some positive chance, and from near certainty to certainty. What this means is that people start acting weird...

The most horrid Christmas carol performance ever

Dear guildies, I've found it. Quite possibly the most wretched performance of O Holy Night ever to blemish a recording studio. Now in my experience as a professional musician, I have encountered several individuals who were in absolute denial or were otherwise oblivious to their lack of talent. (To ...

RE: So I saw DoAC box set the other day...

DAoC indeed has been dying, and had been losing accounts left and right before WoW rolled out, such that EQ subscriptions actually took a greater proportional hit due to WoW's release than DAoC did. I note too that EQ servers have undergone merges too. BTW- I think the way the servers are merged now...

When text chat won't do

Sometimes in MMORPG, there are epic moments when expressing oneself in typed text chat just can't capture the feeling. Players who use Ventrilo (or the not-as-clear Teamspeak) can share the spirit, for good or ill: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8603508398121012211 P.S. I don't play WoW, I...

Artificial virus introduced in WoW to examine human behavior

OK, This was a deviously clever GM event. Blizzard introduced a "virus" to certain avatars and watched how it spread. http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/index.blog?entry_id=1230071 I suspect some epidemiologists/sociologists would like to use this model to see how people might really respond to a pandemi...

/rant ON The failure of the various civic powers to fortify New Orleans, a critical port (5th largest in the world) against the worst that nature could offer is an oversight of truly staggering proportions. That is Commander John Sheridan from Babylon V. He is a very sympathetic character, and a good leader. You could have done a lot worse. Celestial Navigators-- Now in Guild Wars!

Dear CN, In my posted reply to Keldinaar's inquiry about Guild Wars, I mentioned how cool it would be if somebody would create Celestial Navigators in Guild Wars so that CN-grade nice peeps could form groups and explore that eye-candy world a bit. Anyone else on DAoC?

Yeah, it's been out a while, but Mythic adds new content and graphics engine to Dark Age of Camelot keep it pretty fresh. On balance, I think it's a more player-friendly game than EQ, and realm vs realm combat (i.e. fights against other players) is a rush that even end-game raids can't capture. I ha...

On Dark Age of Camelot (the other MMOPRG I play), the emphasis is on player versus player combat-- well, actually realm vs realm.
